There are many people who are looking for a new career. Perhaps you are just starting school and wonder what industry you should enter, or you might already be in the workforce and want to change things up a bit. Speech pathology is a great career choice, one that many people find very fulfilling. Here are some things you should know about becoming a speech therapist:

What Kind Of Education Will I Need?

One of the first things you need to consider is education. You cannot simply become a speech pathologist by just trying it out. You need to become a licensed therapist through the proper channels. The first thing you will need to do is get a bachelors degree in a related field. There are actual degrees at some colleges that are specifically speech pathology or related to speech disorders, but you don't actually have to get a degree in this topic, you can get a degree in any kind of science, psychology, child development, education or related field. From there, you will need to apply and enter a master's program specifically to become a speech pathologist. After you graduate with your master's degree, you can become licensed through tests and clinical hours.

What Kind Of Jobs Can You Get As A Speech Pathologist?

The most common job you get with this kind of degree is a speech therapist. A speech therapist can work with a variety of different clients. The most common is probably children who have speech impediments who must learn how to speak properly. You can work in a school, or a private office and take clients. Thus, speech pathologists do best when they enjoy working with children since that is a very common route. You can also work with patients who have lost the ability to speak and are regaining it. For example, if a person has had a stroke or some traumatic brain injury it is likely that they will need help learning how to talk again. Also, those individuals who might have been hearing impaired for the majority of their life, but now want to learn who to speak, whether because they have gotten a cochlear implant or just want to learn, will need therapy to learn how to form the sounds.

Lastly, some people work in occupational therapists jobs and related industries. Like in a rehab center where they help people recover from problems.

These are some things you should know about speech pathology. For more information and assistance, contact a company like Center for Communication Care LLC.
